Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation in Los Angeles, CA

Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Copperfield-compatible chimney caps across the Los Angeles Basin, with most replacements running $380 to $720 installed depending on flue size and whether your crown needs resealing. Same-day installation is available when you call before noon, and we carry the common 8″, 10″, and 13″ round sizes plus standard rectangular models on every truck. Most Los Angeles homeowners discover their cap has failed during the first good rain of winter, when water starts dripping down the flue or they notice rust stains weeping down the brick from the crown line.

Which Copperfield Models This Applies To

Copperfield chimney caps fall into several product lines, and matching the right series matters more than many owners realize. The Black Galvanized series, Stainless Steel line, and Copper collection each use different base flange depths and mesh screen densities. Check the stamped model number on the underside of the existing cap’s lid, or measure the flue tile’s outside dimension at the crown surface, not the chimney top edge. A 10″ round flue with a 2″ overhang takes a different base than a 10″ flue flush with the crown.

We are an independent service provider, not affiliated with Copperfield Supply. For most Los Angeles installations, we recommend OEM Copperfield caps for their 304 stainless mesh and welded-seam lids that hold up against Santa Ana wind gusts. In some cases, a quality equivalent from Olympia Chimney or Gelco matches the spec at a lower price point. We’ll show you both options and explain the difference before you decide. The wrong choice is usually a cap with undersized mesh that clogs with jacaranda debris by June.

Signs Your Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • Rust streaks running down the chimney face. Galvanized caps in Los Angeles typically show surface rust at year 8 to 12 due to marine layer moisture and UV cycling. Once rust bleeds past the base flange, the cap is no longer protecting the crown edge.
  • Water dripping into the firebox during rain. This means the lid seam has separated, the mesh has pulled away from the base, or the cap has shifted off-center after wind exposure. The flue liner is now funneling water directly onto your smoke shelf.
  • Animal sounds or debris in the flue. Copperfield caps use 5/8″ mesh to stop birds and squirrels. When mesh corrodes or a corner lifts, you’ve created an entry point. We’ve removed starling nests from flues in Los Feliz and raccoon bedding from Pasadena chimneys where the cap failed.
  • Visible gap between cap base and crown surface. Thermal expansion and Santa Ana wind vibration loosen mortar bedding over time. A 1/4″ gap is enough to drive rain under the cap and saturate the crown, leading to freeze-thaw cracking in the Foothills.
  • The cap is missing entirely after a wind event. This happens when the original installer used generic strap anchors instead of Copperfield’s counter-flashed base design. We find caps in front yards from Sherman Oaks to Whittier after March windstorms.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Price Range
Copperfield cap replacement, standard size (8″-13″ round) $380 - $520
Copperfield cap replacement, oversize or custom base $520 - $720
Crown resealing with CrownCoat (recommended if cracked) $180 - $340 additional
Flue tile repair if spalled at top $220 - $450 additional

What drives the range: flue height above the roofline, whether we need a ladder setup or full scaffold per Los Angeles code for slopes over 6/12, and crown condition. Every installation includes new stainless fasteners, high-temp silicone bedding, and a Level-2 camera inspection afterward so you see the flue is clear. The 90-Day Done Right Promise covers the installation in writing, no arguing. The cap itself carries Copperfield’s manufacturer warranty, which we register for you.

DIY or Call Us?

An owner can safely check whether the cap is centered and whether mesh is intact from the ground with binoculars. You can also verify the model stamp if you’re comfortable on a ladder and your roof is walkable.

We do not recommend homeowner installation. Chimney cap work involves working at height on a roof surface that may be steeper than it appears, and a dropped cap or tool can damage roofing or cause serious injury. More critically, improper bedding and fastening leads to the exact failures we described above, often within one season. The chimney doesn’t lie. Neither do I. We’ve reinstalled too many caps that were “straight” but not square to the flue, or that used the wrong anchor type for the crown material.

Our technicians carry the full range of Copperfield, Gelco, and Olympia Chimney caps, background-checked and uniformed, and most Los Angeles replacements are completed in a single visit with no-hassle upfront pricing. Call (844) 418-0954 for a free estimate.
