- Water dripping into the firebox during rain. This means the lid seam has separated, the mesh has pulled away from the base, or the cap has shifted off-center after wind exposure. The flue liner is now funneling water directly onto your smoke shelf.
- Animal sounds or debris in the flue. Copperfield caps use 5/8″ mesh to stop birds and squirrels. When mesh corrodes or a corner lifts, you’ve created an entry point. We’ve removed starling nests from flues in Los Feliz and raccoon bedding from Pasadena chimneys where the cap failed.
