DuraFlex Crown Repair in Los Angeles, CA

DuraFlex Crown Repair: The Los Angeles Owner’s Guide

DuraFlex crown repair in Los Angeles typically runs $380-$780 installed, depending on liner diameter and whether the chase top needs resealing. We stock DuraFlex-compatible crown assemblies and refractory mix for most 5.5-inch through 8-inch diameter liners, and we complete most replacements same day. Most Los Angeles homeowners discover the problem during the first heavy rain of winter, when water starts dripping down the flue or staining the firebox ceiling.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex crowns are not universal. The correct repair depends on whether your system is DuraFlex SW (stainless wall), DuraFlex HT (high-temperature aluminized), or the older DuraFlex Pro series discontinued around 2012. Check the collar stamp near the top termination, or measure the outer liner diameter with a tape measure across the crown base. SW series takes a 304 stainless crown with a 2-inch minimum overhang; HT series uses a lighter aluminized cap with a different bolt pattern that will not interchange.

We carry OEM DuraFlex crowns from Copperfield Supply, plus aftermarket equivalents from Gelco that match spec and carry the same 10-year thermal warranty. The aftermarket saves roughly $80-$120 on parts, and we will show you both options on the truck. One compatibility gotcha: DuraFlex Pro collars used a 4-bolt pattern, while current SW and HT use 6-bolt. If your chase top was retrofitted, the bolt holes may not align without a adapter plate, which we stock.

Hearthstone Chimney Co. of Los Angeles is an independent service provider. We are not affiliated with DuraFlex or its parent company.

Signs Your DuraFlex Crown Repair Is Failing

  • Water dripping down the flue during rain. The crown’s refractory seal has cracked or the metal collar has separated from the masonry, creating a direct path for water. In Los Angeles, thermal cycling between 45°F winter mornings and 85°F afternoons accelerates this separation.
  • White efflorescence staining on the exterior chase brick. Moisture is migrating through the crown and carrying salts to the surface. This means water has already breached the crown’s waterproofing layer.
  • Rust streaks down the chimney from the crown edge. The stainless or aluminized collar is corroding at the seam, usually because the original installer used standard fasteners instead of stainless hardware rated for marine atmospheres.
  • Spalling or flaking concrete on the crown surface. The crown mix was too thin or lacked acrylic fortifier, common in 1990s Los Angeles tract construction. Once the surface opens, freeze-thaw damage follows even in mild climates.
  • Smoke odor in upper rooms when the fireplace is not in use. A cracked crown can create negative pressure paths that pull downdrafts through gaps, carrying creosote smell into the house.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Our installed pricing for DuraFlex crown repair in Los Angeles breaks down as follows:

  • Standard DuraFlex SW or HT crown replacement, 5.5″-6.5″ diameter: $380-$520
  • Large diameter 7″-8″ crown or chase top resealing required: $580-$780
  • DuraFlex Pro adapter plate (if needed): $85 additional
  • Full crown rebuild with poured refractory cap and new DuraFlex collar: $720-$940

Every repair includes removal of the failed crown, inspection of the flue collar and chase top with our Level-2 camera, installation of the new assembly with stainless fasteners, and a water-test before we leave. The number on the estimate is the number on the invoice. All crown work carries our 90-Day Done Right Promise, in writing, no arguing. If water gets in, we come back.

DIY or Call Us?

An owner can safely check the crown from the ground with binoculars for visible cracks or rust streaks. You can also verify your DuraFlex series from the installation manual or by calling us with the collar stamp numbers.

We do not recommend owner repair. Crown work requires working at roof height on a chimney chase, often with a 6/12 pitch or steeper common in Los Angeles hillside neighborhoods like Echo Park or Mount Washington. The refractory mix must cure in specific temperature ranges, and the DuraFlex collar must seat with a proper thermal expansion gap. A misaligned crown voids the liner warranty and can channel water directly into the chase wall, causing thousands in structural damage. We have redone three DIY crown jobs this year in the Basin alone, each costing more than the original professional repair would have.
